Questions to ask before buying a fragrance online

Questions to ask before buying a fragrance online

Buying perfume online means choosing without a sniff, so ask five things first: can you try it, what is in it, how long does it last on skin, how easily can you swap it, and where does it ship from. The answers tell you whether you are buying a scent or a name.

I make our butter by hand and I read other brands' pages the same way. This is the list I use. It sits with our guide to using the Discovery Set to find your scent.

Can you try it before you commit?

This is the one that matters most. A sample set, a small size or a clear swap policy lets you test on your own skin. Without one, you are paying full price for a guess.

With obsessed, the Discovery Set is six 1 oz sample jars, one of each scent, for $19, with a $15 credit code toward a full jar.

How do you read a scent description?

Look for notes in order: top, heart and base. Top notes leave first, base notes stay. A description that only says "fresh and lovely" tells you nothing. One that names notes and a character does.

If a scent is described as inspired by a designer fragrance, that tells you the profile it follows. It does not tell you it is identical, and a good seller will not say so. Ours are inspired by designer scents, and we name the notes for each one.

What should you look for in the claims?

Specific beats vague. Be wary of big promises with no detail, and of any seller that says a scent works on everyone. Skin chemistry differs, so no scent behaves the same on two people.

Check how the seller describes longevity. Ours is 12+ hours on most skin, longest on damp skin after a shower. That is a range with a condition, which is how it should be said.

What should you check about swaps, returns and shipping?

  • Is there a swap or return policy, and is it simple to claim?
  • Does it ship from your country, with tracking?
  • Is shipping free above a certain spend?
  • Can you read the ingredients?

For us: free scent swap within 14 days, a 30-day money-back guarantee claimed by replying to your order email, and shipping from the US in 1 to 2 business days with tracking. Shipping is free over $50. We sell in the US only. The full ingredient list is coming soon; the base is shea and cocoa butter with fragrance and a pheromone ingredient.

How do you narrow the choice?

Start with the families you already like. Our find your scent quiz and compare page do the sorting. Then wear one scent for a full day before you decide.

For what to do if it is not right, see how the free scent swap works.

Is buying perfume online worth the risk?

It can be, and the risk shrinks when you ask the questions above. The upside is time and choice. You can read descriptions at your own pace, compare scents side by side and avoid the pressure of a counter.

The best approach is to start small. Buy a sample set before you buy a full size, then commit to the one you reach for most. That removes most of the guesswork.

What should a seller tell you about price?

The full price, any bundle savings and any shipping cost, up front. Designer bottles can cost a lot; the ones our scents are inspired by run about $325 for the bottle. Our jar is $25, two jars are $43.38 and three are $58.08. Shipping is free over $50.

A seller that hides a cost until checkout is telling you how it will treat you later. Look for plain numbers on the product page.

What about reviews?

Read them for detail, not for stars. A review that mentions how the scent smelled after three hours is worth more than one that says it is amazing. Keep in mind that skin chemistry differs, so another person's result is a hint, not a forecast. The best test is your own skin.

That is why we suggest starting with samples. They turn a guess into a trial, and they cost a lot less than a full-size mistake.
