The harder part is choosing the second time. This guide shows how to work out what was off and pick again with less guessing. It sits with our guide to using the Discovery Set to find your scent.
Why can a scent smell different on you?
Skin chemistry and warmth change how a fragrance opens and settles. The top notes leave first, then the heart and base show. A scent that smelled great in the jar can read sweeter or sharper on you after a few hours.
That is why it helps to wear a scent for a full day before deciding. The first sniff tells you very little.
What do you do if the scent is not right?
Name what bothered you. Was it too sweet, too sharp, too heavy, too faint? That one word guides the swap.
- Too sweet: look at the fresher end, such as Sea Sage or Paris Blush.
- Too sharp or green: look for something softer, such as Velvet Lavender.
- Too heavy: step down from Crimson Amber or Dark Tuberose, our two louder scents.
- Too light: step up to Roman Vanilla or Crimson Amber.

How do you test a scent well?
Apply one scoop on damp skin after a shower, on the neck, collarbone, chest and wrists. Wear it on a normal day. Check it at the start, after a couple of hours and at the end of the day. Butter holds scent close to the skin, and it can last 12+ hours on most skin.
Test one scent at a time. Two in one day will blur together.
What does a good perfume swap policy include?
Four things: a clear time window, a simple way to ask, no charge to switch, and honest wording about what can be swapped. Ours is a free scent swap within 14 days, and you ask by replying to your order email. There is no form to find.
When you read any seller's policy, check that it is written plainly. If you need to hunt for the terms, that tells you something.
Which scents are easiest to swap between?
These are my suggestions, and they are opinions rather than rules.
- From Crimson Amber to Roman Vanilla: you keep the warmth and lose some of the sweetness.
- From Dark Tuberose to Velvet Lavender: you keep a floral feel with a much softer edge.
- From Sea Sage to Paris Blush: you stay bright, and add rose.
- From Paris Blush to Sea Sage: you stay fresh and lose the floral.
Should you swap or add a second jar?
If the first scent was close but not quite right, swap. If you liked it and want a different mood, add a second jar. Two jars are $43.38 with a free travel tin, and a small rotation suits most people better than a single scent anyway.
What if you liked the scent but not how it lasted?
Check how you applied it. The butter holds scent best on damp skin after a shower, and 12+ hours on most skin is the target, longest when skin is damp. If you applied it to dry skin or only to your wrists, try again with one scoop on the neck, collarbone, chest and wrists before you decide it is the scent.
