The arm's length test: how to check your scent is just right
Here is how to know if perfume is too strong: try the arm's length test: if you can clearly smell it on yourself with your arm stretched out, or someone a step away can name it, it is stronger than it needs to be. A good scent is found by the people who come close.
Our pheromone blend is made to help you attract the people you want close, which is one more reason to keep a scent personal instead of loud. It takes ten seconds, needs no one else and works with any perfume or butter you own.
How does the arm's length test work?
- Apply your scent as usual and wait five minutes or so for the first burst to settle.
- Stand still and stretch one arm straight out in front of you.
- Pay attention to what you smell at that distance, not at your wrist.
- If the scent is clear and obvious, it is on the loud side. If you only catch a faint trace, or nothing, you are in a good place.
Then bring your collarbone or wrist close. That is the distance the scent is meant for: close enough to notice. The hug at the door, the quiet moment at a table, the person who leans in and asks what you are wearing.
How to know if perfume is too strong when you can't smell it
This is the real problem. Your nose gets used to a smell within minutes, a bit like walking into a room with candles and soon forgetting they are lit. It does not mean the scent has faded. It means you have stopped noticing it.
Three things help:
- Decide the number of sprays before you start. If you are layering over a scented butter, one or two is usually enough. How many sprays of perfume goes into this.
- Ask a friend you trust, and ask for a straight answer.
- Step away. Leave the room for a few minutes, come back and check again. Fresh air resets your nose.
What are the signs that a scent is too strong?
Look for what other people do. If someone steps back when you arrive, wrinkles their nose, or mentions your perfume within seconds of meeting you, it is probably too much. The same applies if you can smell it clearly on your own clothes at the end of the day, long after application.
In enclosed places, such as an office, a car or a plane, a scent that is fine outdoors can become overwhelming. Smaller spaces need smaller amounts.
How do you fix a scent that is already too strong?
Wash the area with soap and water. That removes most of it. If you cannot wash, blot the area with a damp cloth, which lowers it a little. Next time, take away one spray, or put the perfume over a quieter butter.
A base helps in a different way too. A scented butter spreads the job between two layers, so you can use less perfume and still get a lasting scent. How to layer body butter and perfume covers the method in full.
Does the type of scent change the test?
Yes. Some scents are loud by nature. Dark Tuberose and Crimson Amber, the two louder scents in our range, tend to travel further than the others, so check them with the test before you leave. Lighter ones, such as Velvet Lavender, rarely overwhelm. For more on handling bold scents, two loud scents never go together has the options.
Repeat the test at different times of day. A scent that passes at nine in the morning can feel louder at four in the afternoon, once the body has warmed it and the skin has taken it in. If it passes at both times, you have found your number.
Also try it with different pairings. A perfume that is loud alone may pass the test comfortably over a quieter butter, because the two layers share the work. Likewise, a butter that is soft by itself can feel strong when you add the wrong perfume on top. Treat each combination as its own scent, and test each one.
Finally, remember that the right level depends on the setting. A scent that works at a dinner for two may be too much at the office, and the reverse. The arm's length test is a tool for adjusting, so run it whenever you try something new or when your usual scent starts to feel off. For a calm start, begin with fewer sprays than you think you need, then add one only if you want it.
Quick answers
How long should I wait before testing?
About five minutes. The first burst of alcohol and top notes settles by then, and you get a truer picture of what others will smell.
Can I smell too strong if others cannot?
Yes, but it is rarer. Most of the time, if you can clearly smell your scent at arm's length, others can too.
Is it fine to smell my perfume all day?
A faint trace now and then is fine. Smelling it constantly and strongly is a sign to use less next time.
What if I like a loud scent?
Wear it, with one spray and a quiet butter underneath. Loud suits some occasions. The test just helps you choose.
If you want a gentle base to keep things quiet, Velvet Lavender is the lightest of our six, and the scent quiz can point you to the one that fits.
